Member Q&A with Jeff Huber
Each month I invite a member who has completed all the tutorial chapters & answered all the questions at the end of each chapter to ask me questions on a zoom conversation.
I hope this will be added value for all members to add some context & texture to the content.
Want to be invited on one of these Q&As? Make sure you answer all the questions at the end of each tutorial chapter!
Jeff coaches at varsity boys basketball, Westlake High School in Westlake, Ohio.
Jeff has been a boys varsity basketball coach for 13 years, he also coaches his daughters 4th grade basketball team and was interested in how these concepts translate to both levels.
Jeff's questions -
- How does the rule of 3 at level 1 work? Can we assess players self evaluations during live play or do we always need to stop play with a reset or pull that player out?
- If a reset, how does that look?
- if we are doing action reviews in a team setting, how do we manage time? Do we need to let every player go through level 1 then go back through every player at level 2 to analyse teammates? Is time a concern?
- What does it mean to commit 100% to an action? Is it as simple as player picking a focus for a drill or practice and then telling us that (so we know what they are committing to)?
- Are behaviours and state the same thing?
- Can you clarify what ifs and permissions?
- Before every drill/part of practice should we do UAE or is UAE for the whole practice session?
- How do we balance covert recalls and practice planning? I know you suggested doing them early in practice and using them to guide the rest of the session. How does you balance that with having a practice plan ahead of the session?
- In terms of types of sessions (competing, learning), can we go back and forth within a session or do you recommend the whole session be one thing? If changing, should we alert athletes every time we change?
- How and when should a coach intervene in live play and how do we balance the need to intervene quickly with the rule of 3?
- You talk a lot about scanning. Is there a best practice to teach that to players?
